It is a time for new beginnings. With the start of 2009, several companies have finalized their mergers and now plan to take on a larger chunk of the market. Wells Fargo recently outmaneuvered Citigroup and acquired Wachovia, making it the US bank with the most branches. Verizon will also grow in 2009 to be the largest wireless provider thanks to its purchase of Alltel.

On the flip side, some mergers have also given way to departures. Following the merger of Merrill Lynch and Bank of America, the former Merrill Lynch president and other top execs have stepped down.

According to today’s hot searches, departures can also make way for mergers. If you can bare to break up with ten Facebook friends, your stomach will be merging with a free hamburger. That’s right! A new Burger King campaign is paying people in burgers to shed their Facebook friends. You may think it is easy to drop a C-list friend back in to the social networking abyss, but it isn’t that simple. Each friend you ditch will get a message telling them you traded them in for a flame-broiled piece of beef. That seems a little harsh, but depending on the friends, you may be trading up.

What other big news and gossip happened today?

    6. new kids on the block cruise Ahoy! The New Kids on the Block are hitting the high seas.

The five boys from Beantown have announced they will launch a concert cruise on the heels of their reunion tour – which sold out arenas across the country and sent grown women screaming like tweens.

The ‘Kids’ – Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood and Jonathan and Jordan Knight – revealed plans for the cruise ship concert to People.com in a video interview.

“Our manager tells us this is not a cheesy thing, this is not a step back,” says McIntyre in the video.

And Jordan Knight wants fans to know his birthday falls during the cruise dates, on May 17. “I’ll be looking for presents,” he says.

The New Kids ship hits the water from May 15-18, launching from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., then heading to the Bahamas.

    7. michelle schrenker Authorities in Indiana have said little about the nature of the investigation into Schrenker’s businesses — Heritage Wealth Management Inc., Heritage Insurance Services Inc. and Icon Wealth Management — wealth management companies that provide financial advice. Jim Gavin, a spokesman for Indiana’s secretary of state, said investigators are looking at possible securities violations, and officers who searched Schrenker’s home Dec. 31 were looking for laptops, computers, notes, photos and other documents related to those companies.

Court records show his wife, Michelle, filed for divorce a day before the searches.

Gavin said the Indiana Securities Division obtained a temporary restraining order Monday freezing the personal assets of Marcus Schrenker and Michelle Schrenker and the assets of the three companies.
